Emily Baines was born in 1978 and gained her earliest musical experience at her parents’ knees. An early interest in the recorder aged 4 led her to study for many years with Alan Davis in her native Birmingham. Before even leaving school Emily had already performed professionally with period theatre companies, Ex Cathedra, and as a session musician for BBC Radio. At 17 she also performed in Birmingham’s Symphony Hall as the recorder soloist in Bach’s 2nd Brandenburg concerto with Crispian Steele-Perkins. As a student at Hull University she continued to perform widely on period instruments as an active member of various early music ensembles including numerous solo performances as part of the Beverly Early Music Festival. In 2001 she was also awarded the Mrs Sunderland prize for solo performance and the University Prize for Music
After university Emily moved to Holland to continue her studies in recorder and classical singing at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. There she studied recorder with Dorothea Winter, singing with Thea van der Putten and Gerda van Zelm and also made a particular study in recorder consort playing and early music theory and aesthetics with Peter van Heyghen. Indeed she has performed widely around Holland as part of the acclaimed Fiori Consort. In additon to all of this she has performed in masterclasses and coaching sessions with Kees Boeke, Gerd Lüneberger, Eric Menzel, Paul Hillier and Peter Holtslag.
Emily continues to perform professionally throughout the Netherlands,and the UK (both as a soloist and with various ensembles including the baroque ensemble Parthenia which she co-founded and recorder trio Sensus). She has also toured Australia where she gave concerto performances, lectures, masterclasses and made a recording with Salut! Baroque, all to great acclaim. She was recently awarded an MMus with distinction from Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is now pursuing her own academic, teaching and performing interests as a Guildhall Artist Fellow.
